Carteret County Property Tax Bills Arriving Soon
CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (August 7, 2026) – The Carteret County Tax Administration Office has mailed more than 82,000 annual property tax bills to property owners. Tax bills are currently being delivered and should arrive in mailboxes throughout the coming days. Real and personal property will be billed separately. Tax bills and property records are also available online.
Property tax amounts are based on current assessed property values and the tax rates adopted by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners and municipal governing boards for fiscal year 2026-27. The county tax rate is 22.5 cents per $100 of assessed value.
Property taxes are due Sept. 1, 2026. However, taxpayers have a four-month payment window before interest begins. Payments made on or before Jan. 5, 2027, will not be charged interest or penalties. Payments received after Jan. 5 will be charged a 2% interest penalty for January, plus an additional 0.75% for each month the balance remains unpaid. Delinquent taxes may be subject to collection actions allowed under North Carolina law.
Taxpayers who disagree with the assessed value of their personal property have 30 days from the date on their tax bill to submit an appeal. This appeal period applies only to personal property values and is separate from the property tax payment deadline.
Property owners in Beaufort, Bogue, Cape Carteret, Cedar Point, Emerald Isle, Morehead City, and Peletier will receive one tax bill that includes both county and municipal taxes. This partnership provides one point of contact for property tax questions and payments.
Those who own property in Carteret County can now sign up for a new paperless billing service that allows future annual tax notices to be delivered by email. To enroll, scan the QR code included with this year's tax bill and use the registration code printed on the bill.
