City to conduct residential damage assessments following Tropical Storm Lala

HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) will begin conducting residential damage assessments today in areas impacted by Tropical Storm Lala. More than two dozen DPP inspectors will visit affected properties to document storm-related damage and help determine the extent of impacts to residential structures.
These assessments are a critical part of the disaster recovery process. Information collected through damage assessments will help determine the scope and severity of the disaster and supports efforts to seek federal disaster assistance, including potential funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Residents may see DPP inspectors in neighborhoods and around damaged properties throughout this week. If residents are unsure whether someone is an authorized DPP inspector, they should ask to see the inspector’s official identification badge.
DPP inspectors conducting damage assessments will never ask residents for payment or fees. They will also never ask for for personal or financial information, such as Social Security numbers, bank account information, credit card numbers or passwords.
During assessments, inspectors may document visible damage, take photographs, note the type and extent of damage, and gather other information necessary to develop an accurate picture of storm impacts.
Residents should also remain alert for potential scams following Tropical Storm Lala. Anyone claiming to be a government inspector who refuses to provide identification or asks for sensitive information should be treated with caution.
DPP appreciates the public’s cooperation as inspectors work to assess the extent of damage caused by Tropical Storm Lala and support the community’s recovery.
