However, leaving vulnerabilities unpatched doesn’t only expose businesses to rogue nation-states and sophisticated criminal organisations. AI could also enable individual threat actors to operate with capabilities previously associated with large, well-resourced teams. Sherrod DeGrippo of Palo Alto Networks describes this emerging possibility as a “unicorn threat actor: one person, no team, operating with the capability, persistence and sophistication of a nation-state.”

The response cannot rely on prevention alone. Illumio advocates shifting the emphasis towards resilience and recovery and using breach containment and microsegmentation to prevent a single compromise becoming a wider organisational failure.
